During the first Galle District Development Committee meeting of the new Government, it was revealed that 540 mobile phones have been confiscated from the Galle Prison so far this year.
The meeting was held last Thursday (12) at the Galle District Secretariat, chaired by Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage.
Deputy Chief Jailer of the Galle Prison, Dhanushka Pushpakumara said, “Since January, we have confiscated over 540 mobile phones from the Galle Prison. The location of the prison greatly contributes to this situation. We are discussing with the Police to get their support for confiscating these items. There is a road right next to the prison wall, and large parcels could be thrown over the wall. Despite security measures, these items are smuggled in discreetly.”
Galle District Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jagath Seram said, “I have suggested installing a net over the wall and a CCTV system, as well. However, it has been difficult because the surrounding area is occupied by government institutions. High-cost jammers need to be installed. We plan to carry out these tasks in 2025. Additionally, Police teams have been assigned for this purpose. This overcrowded prison, located in the middle of the city, houses nearly double its capacity.”
At the discussion, Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage promised to discuss this matter with the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Prisons.
