Over 62,000 turtle hatchlings released in 2025 by Sri Lanka Coast Guard

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard released 62,352 turtle hatchlings across 14 locations in 2025 under its ongoing Turtle Conservation Project.

The initiative, which began in 2016, is aimed at protecting endangered sea turtle species and their nesting sites around the island. Coast Guard personnel oversee the conservation and hatchery operations at multiple coastal points where nesting activity is prevalent.

Since the project’s inception, more than 191,000 turtle hatchlings have been safely released into the ocean. The conservation effort supports five species of sea turtles known to nest along Sri Lanka’s shores, including the green turtle and the olive ridley. (Newswire)
