Over 712,000 qualify for postal voting

The Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Rathnayake said that 712,321 have qualified for postal votes for the 2024 Presidential Election.

A total of 736,589 applications have been received for postal voting in the upcoming Presidential Election, but 24,268 of them have been rejected, the Election Commissioner General said.

In comparison to the 2019 Presidential election, there is an increase of 52,806 postal voters this year and in the 2019 Presidential election, 659,515 postal voters were eligible to vote.

Postal voting for the upcoming Presidential election will be conducted on September 4, 5 and 6, the Election Commission stated.

On September 4, postal voting facilities will be provided for those employed in the District Secretarial offices, Election Secretariat offices and those serving in the Police. September 5 and 6 have been allotted for postal voters from the rest of the public institutions to cast their votes.

September 11 and 12 have been allocated as additional dates for those who couldn’t cast their postal votes on the previous voting dates, the Election Commission said.

Meanwhile, the distribution of postal ballot papers to government institutions is scheduled to begin next Monday, Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L.Rathnayake said yesterday (20) during a media conference that was held. He further said that the distribution of official ballot papers for the Presidential election will commence at the beginning of September and that the official ballot papers are already being printed.

The 2024 Presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 21 with a total of 17.1 million voters eligible to cast their votes out of which around one million will be voting for the first time. A total of 39 candidates will be contesting the Presidential election this time, which is the highest number of candidates eligible to run for the office of the President in the entire Sri Lankan Presidential election history.
