Over 740 arrested in Easter Sunday attacks probe – Public Security Minister

Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament yesterday (7) that 747 suspects have been arrested so far following investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Counter-Terrorism and Investigation Division in connection with the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

The Minister revealed that 41 cases have been filed in the High Court against 100 suspects, both male and female, and indictments have been filed by the Attorney General (AG) in 14 cases.

Minister Ananda Wijepala further said that after the current government came to power, investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks have begun under a new phase. Accordingly, he said that the facts were reported to the Fort Magistrate’s Court on November 11, 2024 and investigations are underway.

The Minister said that according to the facts reported so far, statements have been recorded from 48 individuals, including 12 civilians, 26 police officers, seven military officers and three prison officers, in the new investigation.

Minister Wijepala said that further investigations are being conducted into the Easter Sunday attack based on the facts revealed through Channel 4 and the facts revealed during the investigations outside of that. Minister Ananda Wijepala said this in response to a question raised by Member of Parliament Ajith Gihan.
