Moratuwa Police arrested two suspects on Tuesday (29) for allegedly stealing electrical equipment and light bulbs worth over Rs. one million from the Moratuwa University premises by passing the special security CCTV system.
Police said that during initial investigations carried out on a complaint received it has been revealed that the suspects had entered the storage room, by passing CCTV cameras. Police said further that the Moratuwa Police Criminal Investigations Unit has launched investigations in search of clues regarding the thieves, within a background where it has not been possible to discover who they were via CCTV recordings.
They also said that during investigations carried out using two teams of Police officers, it was possible to discover that stolen light bulbs had been sold to sales outlets selling bulbs and mentioned further that it was possible to take into custody the two suspects based on clues given by owners of the relevant shops.
According to the Police, more than fifty very costly light bulbs which had been sold to shops at exorbitant prices have been recovered.
The suspects are said to be heroin addicts and are residents of Siribara Menikepura, Katubedda. The suspects are due to be produced before the Moratuwa Magistrate’s Court.
Police Constables Jayantha, Niroshan, Dilanka and Madusanka are carrying out further investigations in this connection under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Mount Lavinia Division Mangala Dehideniya on the instructions of Officer-In-Charge of the Moratuwa Police Chief Inspector of Police Pushpakumara Ferdinandu and on the guidance of Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Division Sub-Inspector of Police Nandana.
