Over two Kgs gold worth over Rs.40 mn seized

Customs officials have seized two kilogrammes and 98 grammes of gold worth over Rs.40 million brought to Sri Lanka illegally by a passenger coming from Dubai.

He had been arrested by Customs officials on Saturday morning at the arrival terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.

A Customs Spokesman said the suspect is a 35-year-old resident of Dematagoda.

“Among the seized gold were 16 gold biscuits weighing 116 grams each and 4 other gold pieces,” the Customs Spokesman said.

The gold had been hidden in his luggage but later the suspect fearing detection had hidden the gold in a passenger cargo trolley, the Spokesman said. Customs officials are conducting further investigations.
