Piliyandala Police have arranged to hand over a stolen gold chain worth Rs. 1.2 million to the owner, although the theft was never reported to the Police.
Police found the gold chain 16 days after the theft, from a disclosure made by a suspect.
Piliyandala Police officers stopped a suspicious motorcycle and found that the person was in possession of 5 grams and 200 milligrams of heroin. Police said that the information about the gold chain was revealed during the interrogation of the suspect.
According to the information received from the suspect, Police managed to find the owner of the gold chain in the Piliyandala, Gorakapitiya area.
The owner stated that at around 5.00 am on August 22 when he was exercising outdoors, a person on a motorcycle came behind him and snatched his gold chain and fled.
He further stated that since it was dark at that time, he could not even see the number of the motorcycle, so he gave up on the gold chain and returned home without making a complaint to the Police.
After two weeks, a Police inspector contacted him and informed him to come to the Police station with the receipt for the gold chain. According to the information revealed during the questioning of the suspect, the stolen gold chain was sold to a person in the Bandaragama, Atalugama area for Rs. 900,000.
It has also been revealed that the suspect’s motorcycle was stolen from the Maharagama, Arawwala area.
It has been further revealed in the Police investigations that the suspect was involved in many robberies of gold chains in the Bandaragama, Piliyandala, Kesbewa, Moratuwa areas.
The gold chain owner Mangala Mihira Kulasinghe was full of praise for the Piliyandala Police.
“I never expected this kind of service from the Police. I couldn’t believe it. I highly appreciate the service of the Piliyandala Police. Also, I would like to give a message to others who exercise to avoid carrying valuables as much as possible while exercising, especially early morning or in the evening.
The 26-year-old suspect will be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court.
