“The late Mr. Palitha Thewarapperuma deviated from traditional politics, adopting a variety of unconventional practices. Often, these practices did not seem to conform to certain social norms and were marked by a persistent and resolute nature. Nonetheless, the public embraced his tenacity with open arms. Since his passing, I have observed numerous social media tributes praising his distinctive approach to politics.

“Interestingly, both supporters and critics of the late Mr. Thewarapperuma’s political ideology have shown appreciation for his steadfast and independent methods. Professor Maithrie Wickremesinghe and I extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, son, and relatives.”

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, through Mr. Gayantha Karunathilaka, stressed the late Mr. Thewarapperuma’s dedication to his public duties and his fearless advocacy for the people’s welfare, acknowledging his ascent from grassroots politics to a ministerial position, as a journey fraught with challenges, yet filled with purpose. “Performing one’s duties to the public is the true way to show gratitude. In the public mission of the late Mr. Palitha Thewarapperuma, we observed his commitment to fulfilling these duties and expressing his gratitude to those who entrusted him with their representation. The late Mr. Thewarapperuma consistently utilised his power and position for the benefit of the people, not for personal gain,.

“He passionately advocated for the people, always prioritising their needs. Fearlessly speaking in accordance to his conscience, his rise from grassroots politics to a ministerial role was far from easy. By acknowledging and overcoming challenges, the late Mr. Thewarapperuma carved a unique legacy in the political history of the Kalutara district.

“At every government meeting, he urged us to provide shelter for the poor and support the enhancement of religious places, thereby demonstrating his deep understanding of and commitment to the lives and aspirations of the people of the Kalutara district.

“The sudden death of the late Mr. Palitha Thewarapperuma, who dedicated himself to the mission of serving the common people, represents a profound loss not only to the residents of the Kalutara district, but also to the disenfranchised individuals across Sri Lanka who lack a voice.

“My heartfelt condolences, and that of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya’s, go out to his beloved wife, mother, son and relatives, as well as to all those near and dear to him, including those in Kalutara, Matugama, and the people who mourn his passing. May the late Mr. Palitha Thevarapperuma, who has departed from us, be blessed with the great Nirvana.”

United National Party Chairman and Member of Parliament, Vajira Abeywardena also expressed his sentiments at the ceremony.
