Palmyrah tree falls on house

With the heavy rains and winds being experienced, a massive palmyrah tree had fallen onto a house in Ganggota, Pilimatalawa, causing severe damage to the two rooms of the house and the kitchen, on Wednesday (22).

Police said that at the time the tree fell, there had been three children and their grandmother in the house.

With the noise of the tree falling, they had run out of the house and so escaped injury.

However, the children had lost their school books and uniforms.

The father of these children had abandoned them awhile back and since they did not have any income, their mother had gone abroad for employment.

The mother, Chandrika Roshini Kumari said that she had been living with the three children amidst severe economic hardship and since she was unable to make ends meet, she had gone abroad for a job in domestic service.

She also said that after paying for expenses of the three children and her mother from the salary she earned, she had nothing to save and therefore, she hopes that a philanthropist will come forward to help her rebuild the house.
