The Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (30) interrogated Pastor Jerome Fernando, accused of damaging religious harmony by making an insulting statement to his followers, for 8 hours.

Pastor Jerome Fernando, who had been out of the country for more than six months, appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday according to an order given by the Court of Appeal, after returning to Sri Lanka, day before yesterday (29) morning. Pastor Fernando left the country on May 14 after the Criminal Investigation Department commenced an investigation regarding the statement, he had made that is offensive to Buddhism.

He left for Singapore from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Two days later, the CID obtained a travel ban against the Pastor through the Court.

The Criminal Investigation Department was preparing to arrest him when he returned to Sri Lanka, but Pastor Jerome Fernando appealed to prevent the arrest through his lawyers.

Accordingly, the Court issued an order to the Criminal Investigation Department not to arrest him when he arrives back in Sri Lanka. However, the Court ordered Pastor Jerome Fernando to give a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department within 48 hours of his arrival in Sri Lanka.
