Puttalam High Court Judge Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda ordered on September 21, that the Police Constable father who was found guilty of sexually abusing his seven-year-old daughter,
be sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.500,000 to be paid to the victim child.
The severe prison sentence was imposed on Constable 72640 Ajith Kumara, a resident of Nawagattegama, Galwanguwa, Mullegama, who was attached to the Anamaduwa Police, and whose service has been interdicted.
The child who suffered serious sexual abuse is said to have been seriously sexually abused by her father, the Constable, on or around February 19, 2019 on three occasions.
On February 25, 2020, according to a complaint made by the grandmother of the girl, a resident of Kantale, Waan-ela, Pansalgodella, address, who was the guardian of the girl, investigations were launched and the suspect police constable was arrested and presented to the Anamaduwa Magistrate’s Court.
Accordingly, after hearing the case for more than two years, on September 21, Puttalam High Court Judge Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda announcing the verdict of the case ordered that Police constable who is under arrest in connection with this incident is guilty of all three charges and handed down a sentence of 12 years rigorous imprisonment for each of the three charges to be completed at once. In addition, a fine of Rs.10,000 (ten thousand) for each offence, that is Rs.30,000 for each additional charge was imposed together with a fine of Rs.500,000 to be paid to the victim. The judge ordered that in default of payment of the fine, an a sentence of six months additional imprisonment would be added and if the fine of Rs.500,000 to the victim is not paid another year of rigorous imprisonment will be added to the sentence.
Nawagattegama Police appeared in court on behalf of the complaint.
