Train services on the Main Line between Peradeniya and Gampola will resume on October 2 following extensive restoration work to repair severe damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, the Department of Railways stated.
According to Sri Lanka Railways, the cyclone damaged 103 locations along the Rambukkana-Gampola track, including 36 major landslides and 67 earth slips. The department’s Way and Works Sub-Department, in collaboration with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), carried out the restoration work despite significant operational challenges, including steep track gradients in the Rambukkana-Kadugannawa section, a lack of alternative access roads, adverse weather conditions, and the need to transport machinery and raw materials via trains.
Sri Lanka Railways stated that regular train services on the Colombo Fort-Peradeniya/ Gampola section will begin operating under a revised schedule starting the afternoon of October 2, 2026. (Newswire)
