Permanent resolution of Medicine procurement within next year

Deputy Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Hasanka Wijemuni stated that all issues surrounding the procurement of Medicines will be permanently resolved by January 2026, with necessary measures already being implemented to achieve this.

Addressing the All-Island Health Professional Associations’ Conference at the Kandy National Hospital, the Deputy Minister stated that a mafia is orchestrating both the actual shortage of Medicines and the exaggerated claims of unavailability. “This entire situation is being manipulated from a single source,” he said.

Dr. Wijemuni highlighted that the current Medicine import process takes up to 9 months, and assured that a sustainable solution will be in place by January 2026. He pledged that no patient would face a shortage of essential Medicines during the interim period, as necessary precautions are already underway.

“No matter what we do, if the results do not positively impact the lives of citizens, it’s pointless,” he emphasised. Criticising previous administrations, he said, “For 70 years, leaders have been making noises without results. However, under our administration, the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme will launch in January, which is not just about cleaning streets, but addressing broader inefficiencies.”

The Deputy Minister elaborated that the initiative would introduce necessary Legal reforms and encourage voluntary participation in cleaning institutions. “For those who fail to comply, we will step in and ensure the work is done,” he added.

Highlighting the Government’s commitment to long-term goals, Dr. Wijemuni contrasted their approach with the short-term strategies of past administrations. “We are not here to play a T20 match; this is a Test match. We won’t swing at every ball or run for every shot. We are here to fulfill the trust placed in us by the people, even if it means addressing century-old issues.”
