Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana told Parliament yesterday that the driving licences that have piled up of late, will be issued by August this year.
The minister said this while joining the parliamentary debate on two directives under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The Minister said that the Motor Traffic Department is one of the main income generating institutes of the Government and it is necessary to digitize the services provided by this institution to provide an efficient service.
Digitisation will also be helpful to prevent the frauds and corruptions since there are various criticisms regarding this department.
He said that in the future, the system of issuing number plates during the registration of cars will also be changed. “Our country has a huge crisis of government revenue. After independence, we have not been able to collect the money required to run the government on a day-to-day basis
Money cannot be minted for any reason. The debt restructuring process is not over yet. No matter who governs this country, a law on the payment of foreign debt must be passed in this parliament,” he added.
