Plans to popularise homeopathy – Minister Dr. Jayatissa

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that the Ministry has initiated plans to popularise homeopathic treatment services in the country.

According to the Health Minister the goal of every medical sector and system should be to keep the citizens healthily thriving, irrespective of the varied treatments and institutions.

Dr. Jayatissa expressed these views following a visit to the Welisara Homeopathic Hospital, which is the only Government-owned homeopathic hospital in the country. He addressed the hospital staff and representatives of the Homeopathic Medical Council during a meeting held after his inspection tour.

The Welisara Homeopathic Hospital aims to foster a healthy population by treating a range of conditions daily, including children’s and women’s diseases, respiratory and skin disorders, gastrointestinal issues, rheumatic and arthritic conditions, chronic headaches, goiter, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint problems and arthritis. The hospital has set plans to introduce a cost-effective and beneficial medical system through homeopathy, making disease cure and prevention accessible and affordable to all citizens.

The Homeopathic Medical Council, being the sole medical body for homeopathy, oversees doctors, compounders, nurses’ registration, management of homeopathic institutions, production, importation, storage, sale and regulation of homeopathic treatments. The council also actively operates 14 clinics countrywide.

With a history spanning over 200 years, homeopathy remains one of the most popular medical systems worldwide, apart from Western medical practices. Minister Jayatissa emphasised the ongoing state of homeopathic treatment services and future goals for the country during his visit. He inspected various facilities at the Welisara Homeopathic Hospital, including the outpatient department, inpatient treatment wards and the pharmacy.

The outpatient department at Welisara handles nearly 200 patients daily and the inpatient section operates around the clock.

Recognising the potential of homeopathic treatment to significantly alleviate diseases without side effects, the Minister detailed plans to promote this practice further. This includes filling staff vacancies, ensuring adequate medicine supplies for clinics and mobile units, establishing laboratory services, strengthening outpatient services, enhancing inpatient wards with 50 beds and installing radiation and physiotherapy services along with counseling departments to develop the hospital into a teaching facility.

The Chairperson of the Homeopathic Medical Council and officials including Chief Medical Officer of Welisara Dr. Chandani Herath, along with other council members and homeopathic doctors, participated in these discussions. The Minister’s future goals highlighted the establishment of a Homeopathic Medical College in Sri Lanka, local production of homeopathic medicines and setting up Government homeopathic clinics and hospitals in every district to develop human resources in the field. This initiative also aims to attract tourists by enhancing unique factors such as homeopathic treatments under the current Government’s strategies, providing the necessary facilities and implementing expert recommendations through a national plan to expand this medical sector.
