The Sub‑Committee on Education Reforms has revealed plans to reduce the number of subjects for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination to seven, with History and Aesthetics among those to be included.
The announcement was made during a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya.
It was further disclosed that for Grades 12 and 13, new modules on Social Cohesion, Law, and Ethics are to be introduced.
At the meeting, discussions also focused on the progress of the general education reforms and preschool education reforms scheduled to be implemented from 2027.
As part of the initial phase, activity books, teacher guides, and modules have already been prepared for Grades 2 and 6, while teacher training programs are currently underway.
A series of awareness programs on the new reforms are also to be rolled out in the near future.
It was also informed at the meeting that in addition, a National Preschool Education Policy has been formulated to formalize early childhood education.
This includes preschool registration, syllabus preparation, teacher guides, and training programs, all of which are being actively implemented. (Newswire)
