Housing is a fundamental human right of every citizen, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya affirmed, outlining a new framework aimed at ensuring secure and sustainable shelter for all Sri Lankans.
Speaking at the World Habitat Day 2026 commemoration held today (5) at Temple Trees, the Dr. Amarasuriya said that the government is introducing a range of policy changes structured around nine core principles to establish a long-term, sustainable national housing framework.
“Our objective is to empower communities through their participation, enabling everyone to build a dignified home they can truly call their own,” she stated during her address.Highlighting the vision behind the reforms, she emphasized that the initiative focuses on creating a data-driven and scientifically informed development process designed to build an affordable housing system grounded in environmental sustainability, strict construction standards and economic resilience. In this regard, our aim is to ensure that no one is left behind,” she noted.
The national commemoration event was organized by the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply in partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), under the global theme “A Safe Home for All.” (Newswire)
