Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa congratulatedt the new Speaker Dr. Ashoka Ranwala in Parliament yesterday.
Congratulating the new Speaker, Premier Amarasuriya said that Dr. Ashoka Ranwala is the most suitable person for the post of Speaker, while the Opposition Leader said that he wishes him to be able to act Constitutionally and Democratically in Parliament in the future.
Premier Amarasuriya further said that the Parliament has lost the trust of the people of the country in the past. Therefore, the role of restoring the confidence of the people in the Parliament is assigned to the new Speaker.
She also stated that it is the responsibility of the new Speaker to protect the supremacy of Parliament and to make the Parliament a place that represents the people.
Meanwhile, the new Speaker of the 10th Parliament Dr. Ashoka Ranwala making a special statement in Parliament yesterday, said that he is committed to creating an exemplary Parliament in this country.
He also mentioned that it is very important that all the MPs here are determined to fulfil the expectations of the people.
“I am honoured to be appointed to this position. I thank both, the ruling Party and the Opposition, for the trust placed in me. I pledge to protect the supremacy of the Parliament and the Rights of all the MPs, to carry out the responsibility of this important position of Speaker, honestly and efficiently.
Members of Parliament are requested to make effective contributions in the Committees. I kindly request you to work together for the sake of the people and the country at this challenging time.”
