Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that the government aims to produce talented artists, doctors who understand the pain of their patients and engineers who possess a strong sense of humanity, emphasizing that aesthetic education plays a vital role in achieving this objective.
She made these remarks on September 29 while attending the opening of Galle Bataduwa Sri Rathanajothi Vidyalaya as a specialized school offering all aesthetic subjects to identify and nurture student talents in the Southern Province.
Addressing the occasion, the Prime Minister noted that education is not merely about passing examinations or accumulating certificates, but about producing sensitive and responsible citizens who understand society and can bring about positive change. She added that forthcoming education reforms will introduce new fields connected to the economy, preparing Sri Lankan children for global opportunities in digital art, new media, film, music technology and creative industries.
The Prime Minister also announced that education reforms for Grades 2 and 6 will be implemented next year, with Cabinet approval granted on September 28 for the 13-year curriculum framework, the National Education Commission concept paper and the student assessment framework.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage stated that education has been given the highest priority in the government’s development process. Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Chairman and MP Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera added that the government is directing the education sector toward new models to produce a generation of children with a broad vision.
