Police attacked by youth at carnival

A team of Police officers, including the OIC of the Crimes Division of the Bentota Police, who went to settle a dispute during a carnival at the Bentota Regional Stadium, were attacked by youths with sticks, clubs and helmets on Sunday (13).

Four Police officers who sustained injuries during the assault had been admitted to the Bentota Hospital.

Seven suspects who were taken into custody in connection with the incident were produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court and subsequently remanded until August 22, on the orders of Magistrate Hansadeva Samaradivakara.

On Sunday, the last day of the carnival, when the musical show ended at around 1.00 am, Bentota Police officers who were deployed as security had intervened to settle a conflict between two groups of youths. At that time, a group of drunken youths had attacked the Police officers with sticks and helmets and the head of Bentota Police Crimes Division Inspector Dhananjaya Rajapaksa sustained head injuries. The Bentota Police said that three other Police officers who were hit by stones and sticks are also undergoing treatment at the Bentota Hospital.

The Police say that after being admitted to Bentota Hospital on Sunday night, two injured youths had left without informing the hospital authorities.

Police officers of the Bentota Police Station are due to carry out an independent investigation on the instructions of Ambalangoda Assistant Superintendent of Police U.A. Amarasiri.
