Police freeze Rs. 22 million BMW in illegal assets investigation

The Sri Lanka Police have issued a freezing order on a BMW luxury vehicle worth approximately Rs. 22 million, suspected to have been purchased using proceeds from drug trafficking.

According to Police, investigations revealed that a suspect from Negombo, who was arrested in connection with drug trafficking, had allegedly used money earned through illegal drug activities to purchase assets under his son’s name.

The Illegal Assets Investigation Division launched an investigation following information that the suspect had acquired the property using funds generated through drug trafficking.

As part of the investigation, authorities issued a 14-day freezing order on the BMW vehicle, effective October 13, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The order prevents the vehicle from being sold, transferred or subjected to any other transactions during the specified period.

Police said further investigations are underway to determine the source of the funds and examine the suspected illegal assets. (Newswire)
