The Katunayake Airport Police and the Airport Tourism Police have begun an investigation to apprehend a Chinese national who stole 14,000 US dollars worth Rs.5 million from the handbag of a Lebanese national. This 47-year-old Lebanese businessman arrived at the Katunayake Airport on Wednesday, (13), from Muscat, Oman, on Oman Airlines flight WY-371. Three other individuals, including the suspected Chinese national, accompanied him in the business class.
The handbag of this Lebanese national businessman was placed in the luggage compartment above the passenger seats in the plane.
The Chinese national took the money from the Lebanese national’s wallet, and he replaced it with a bundle of 18 five Egyptian pound notes.When the Lebanese businessman went to the banks at Katunayake Airport’s arrival terminal to exchange his US dollars to Sri Lanka Rupees, he discovered he had been robbed.
Following his complaint, the robbery was investigated by the Katunayake Airport Tourist Police and the Airport Police, and it was determined that the money had been taken by this Chinese person on the flight when the lights were dimmed.
