Sri Lanka Police have denied claims that a youth was questioned by Dematagoda Police over traditional Sinhala curse verses (was kavi), announcing that an investigation has been launched into the allegations circulating on social media.
According to a statement issued by the Police Media Division, a report was obtained from the Dematagoda Police Station following the circulation of a video claiming that Police had recorded a statement from an individual in connection with traditional Sinhala curse verses on or around October 22.
However, Dematagoda Police have confirmed that no complaint regarding such verses had been received and that no statements had been recorded from any individual in connection with the matter.
The Police Media Division further stated that claims made on social media by Attorney-at-Law Sudath Kumararatne regarding the alleged questioning were false.
Accordingly, the Central Crime Investigation Bureau has commenced an investigation into the claims on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Previously, Kumararatne, a lawyer affiliated with the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), had claimed that Dematagoda Police summoned and questioned one of his clients over traditional Sinhala curse verses that circulated widely on social media during a recent protest by Buddhist monks.
He alleged that his client had been questioned about whether he had written the verses, which reportedly began with an invocation to the deity Vajrapani. (Newswire)
