A Police Sergeant attached to the Malwathuhiripitiya Police Station has been suspended from service following allegations that he solicited a bribe to facilitate the release of an arrested suspect on bail.
The suspension follows the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing the officer requesting a bribe from an individual in exchange for securing bail for a person arrested on suspicion on the night of September 26, 2026.
Following the emergence of the video, an investigation was conducted under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in charge of Gampaha Division 04.
Based on the findings of the investigation, authorities have taken steps to suspend the Police Sergeant from service.
Meanwhile, a further preliminary investigation into the incident is currently underway under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Gampaha Police Division. (Newswire/ AI Image)
