Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said an investigation would be conducted into allegations regarding the circumstances surrounding the disrobing of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera at Welikada Prison.
Speaking at a media briefing, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader Udaya Gammanpila said Gnanasara Thera had told him that prison officers had forcibly removed his robe despite his objections. He further alleged that one of the officers had made a video call to an influential person to show the Thera being forced to wear prison attire.
Commenting on Gammanpila’s allegations at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Minister Jayatissa said an inquiry would proceed once the prison authorities lodged an official complaint.
The Minister said the allegations were serious and needed to be verified to establish whether the incident had occurred and under what circumstances.
“Gammanpila can now reveal during the investigation what he said, saw and heard,” Jayatissa said.
He added that Gammanpila’s disclosure would help clarify the incident and that a statement could be recorded to establish the facts.(Newswire)
