Police have urged property owners to exercise caution and conduct proper background checks before renting out houses, business premises or other properties.
Speaking to media, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajeewa Medawatte said drugs, weapons and other items linked to criminal activity are frequently being recovered from rented properties.
He said some property owners rent out their premises without checking the background of prospective tenants.
Police also warned property owners that they could face legal consequences if criminal activity takes place on their premises, depending on the circumstances and applicable law.
The public has also been urged to inform police about suspicious individuals or activities in their neighbourhoods, particularly when unfamiliar persons are seen in the area.
SDIG Medawatte said cooperation from the public has played an important role in detecting and preventing criminal activity.
He added that the government’s ongoing anti-narcotics campaign is aimed at protecting the public and reducing the availability of illegal drugs in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
