Polls Chief warns against publishing Presidential Election surveys on Social Media

Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake has warned against publishing Presidential Election surveys by various groups and individuals on social media, which can be detrimental to the outcome in the voting, as they could influence the independent views of voters, stating that it is a punishable offense by Law.

Saman Sri Ratnayake in a message to the media said that any persons involved in Presidential Election surveys could be arrested.

The Commissioner General of Elections further requested to refrain from conducting Presidential Election surveys to avoid influencing the independent views of the voters on Election day.

Meanwhile, Elections Commission Chairman, R.M.A.L. Rathnayaka said that Police have been instructed to look into the various Presidential Election surveys conducted through social media and tuition classes, and arrest the relevant persons.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has handed over a total of 17,140,354 official Polling cards for the Presidential Election to the Postal Department yesterday (2). The Deputy Postmaster General Rajitha Ranasinghe said 8,000 postal workers will commence its distribution today (3) and will continue until September 14, including Sunday (8), which will be a special distribution day for Polling cards.
