Poultry farmers urge tax relief on poultry foods and vitamins

The All Ceylon Poultry Businessmen’s Association (ACPBA) highlighted that countrywide poultry farmers are currently producing sufficient eggs for domestic use and requested authorities to refrain from imposing further taxes on poultry foods and vitamins in order to keep the prices of chicken and eggs unchanged during the forthcoming festive seasons.

Speaking to Daily News Business ACPBA, Chairman Mathali Jayasekara said all poultry farmers are currently paying Rs.6 tax to produce an egg due to already increased taxes on poultry foods and vitamins and therefore requested the Government not to impose a further tax which has already been announced by the Finance Ministry recently.

The ACPBA, Chairman further said farmers have to spend an additional Rs. 245 for one kilo of chicken due to the last tax increase and the price increase on poultry foods such as maize and soya and also vitamins in the open market .

He predicted that the prices of both chicken and eggs will further come down during the forthcoming X’mas and New Year festive seasons if the Government does not impose further tax on poultry foods.

“Accordingly a kilo of chicken could be sold for less than Rs. 900 and an egg at Rs. 38 or less than that,” he said.

He also said a period of nearly five months are taken for a well-grown chicken to lay eggs and farmers will have to spend a huge cost to maintain a poultry farm.

“According to reports there are over 5,000 large scale poultry farms in the country that are owned by companies and also individuals.”

Jayasekara therefore made a fervent request from the Government to consider the grievances of poultry farmers and refrain from imposing further tax on poultry foods.
