Women and Child Affairs State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe said that poverty is identified as the main challenge faced by Sri Lankan women.
This was revealed at a meeting held between a group of Japanese representatives and State Minister Kumarasinghe recently. This meeting was held prior to a special Japanese delegation meeting scheduled to be held in the coming week under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and with the participation of State Minister Kumarasinghe.
At the meeting, poverty was identified as the main challenge faced by Sri Lankan women and that situation was explained to the Japanese delegation by the Sri Lankan side. The lack of nutrition, marital disputes and lack of proper hygiene are among other challenges discussed. In some cases, child pregnancy was also a matter that received more attention and therefore, there was an emphasis on the collapse of the education of those girls who were subject to child pregnancy.
It was also decided that the Japanese delegation would provide support for starting a programme to reduce these burning issues and develop the livelihoods of women.
The Japanese delegation also agreed to provide the necessary support to improve women’s entrepreneurship as a move to overcome poverty.
