Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, mentioned that the President Ranil Wickremesinghe informed the Cabinet that the government is not in a position to give any salary increase to the government employees in the coming period of this year.
Yesterday (15th), the minister discussed with the some union representatives in several employments belonging to the animal production and livestock development sector.
It was agreed to provide solutions to many problems presented by the trade union representatives. All trade union representatives requested the minister to give a salary increase again this year.
The Minister replied that the President, as the Minister of Finance, informed the Cabinet in the Cabinet meeting held last Monday that the Government is not in a position to give a salary increase to government employees in any way this year.
The minister emphasized that there will be a salary increase for the government employees again next year, and if the salary increase is done again this year, the country may suffer economic collapse again.
In the cabinet discussion held last Monday, we are as ministers made an inquiry to the honorable president in this regard. Various professional groups in every ministry send letters to us asking for a salary increase. Therefore, as the Cabinet Ministers, we requested the Honorable President to clarify in this regard.
Rs.10,000 increment was given this year, so no further increment is possible. If that happens, not only the entire government service but also the country’s economy will collapse again. It is not possible to give salary increase only to selected people.
Our economy is still not stable. Therefore, we have to face many difficulties if we want to win the future. But the President mentioned that it is possible to give a salary increase again next year. Therefore, we provide solutions to all other professional problems. But the minister also mentioned that we express our regret for not being able to give a salary increase due to the current situation due to this financial crisis.
Many representatives representing the Association of Veterinary Doctors, Association of Animal Development Instructors and Animal Development Sector workers participated in these discussions.
