Construction of a new eight-storey Cardiology Unit at the District General Hospital in Trincomalee began Wednesday (16) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The project, funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is being implemented at a cost of Rs. 2,403 million under the Health and Medical Services Improvement Project.
The new facility will include state-of-the-art operating theatres, outpatient and inpatient treatment facilities and fully equipped laboratories to strengthen the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by May 2028.
Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the project had been discussed for several years and that construction was expected to be completed within the scheduled period.
He said four major construction projects were being initiated today under the president’s patronage, with construction projects valued at approximately Rs. 7,100 million and facilities worth around Rs. 12,000 million including equipment being added to the health sector.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra said the Trincomalee project had remained at the discussion stage for nearly a decade and had been among several JICA-assisted projects suspended during the economic crisis.
Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata said the project was part of the longstanding health sector partnership between Japan and Sri Lanka and reaffirmed Japan’s support for efforts to improve health infrastructure.
The President also unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the commencement of construction and met with hospital staff. (Newswire)
