President meets CEB engineers’ unions over restructuring plans

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met representatives of engineers’ trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on Thursday (12) at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the restructuring of the power utility.

During the meeting, the president said the restructuring process aims to ensure a reliable and efficient electricity supply to consumers at a reasonable cost while maintaining state ownership of the newly proposed companies and safeguarding national energy security.

He also assured that all rights currently enjoyed by CEB employees would be protected under the new structure. The discussions also addressed several longstanding issues affecting the electricity sector that had remained unresolved.

The president noted that the restructuring process would be a long-term and carefully planned transition and stressed the importance of maintaining constructive dialogue between employees and the new companies during the transition period.

He also emphasized the need to ensure a supportive working environment that protects employees’ job security and allows them to continue their duties with confidence while addressing their future expectations.

President invited the trade union representatives to work together to overcome current and future challenges facing the country’s electricity sector and to ensure better services for electricity consumers.

Union representatives said they recognize the need for transformation in the sector and expressed willingness to work with the government to achieve the intended objectives.

Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody and Deputy Minister of Power and Energy Arkam Ilyas also attended the meeting.
