UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijayawardena said yesterday that President Ranil Wickremesinghe took over the government at every moment when the economy had fallen. He emphasised that he saved the country in all those situations.
The Deputy Leader also said that he would again invite all the UNP party members to join hands with present President Ranil Wickremesinghe to build a sustainable country.
He said this while participating in the press conference held under the theme “Together We will Win” held at the President’s Presidential Election Media Center located at Lauries road, Bambalapitiya.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to run for the Presidential election this year as an Independent candidate by thinking about the country. His hope is to strengthen the future and economy of this country by uniting all parties.
He is a leader who looks to the future and works according to a long-term plan and policy. He is not a politician or a leader who thinks about himself. His programme is carried forward thinking about the country.
“President Wickremesinghe served six times as the Prime Minister of this country. He did not work to protect the party but thought of the country in all those tenures.
“Our party members had high hopes of getting some privileges under a United National Party government. But, he took over the government at a time when the economy of this country was collapsing,” he said.
“In 2001, when he moved forward as a Prime Minister, he could not go for his targets due to a problem with then President Chandrika Bandaranaike. His government was defeated by opponents. In each case, when the negative economy was turned into a positive economy, the other parties defeated his journey.
