Housing and Urban Development Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe accepted the responsibility of steering the country in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis while other leaders evaded.
“He accepted the challenge on behalf of the suffering people and only he said that it was possible,” he said.
He said that the Leaders of the SLPP decided to handover the country to the President to get the country out of the economic quagmire. “Now our leaders say not to stand with Ranil. That is wrong, when the country fell in 2022, the leaders went abroad. Some went into hiding.
“When the economy was collapsing due to Covid 19, we told President Gotabhaya not to stop importing chemical fertiliser. He lost the farmers”, he said.
The Minister was of the view that it was the supporters of the SLPP who took the peaceful struggle towards violence. “Bangladesh is in anarchy today. We also got ready to bring a successor to the President from outside. It was at that time that Ranil Wickremesinghe led the country. The significance was that he got the former MPs to work properly”, he added.
The country was saved by obtaining aid from the countries of the world. President Ranil Wickremesinghe brought peace to the entire nation without creating differences between religions, races, blue, green and red colours. We worked against him in 27 elections. But today we stand with him for the sake of the country. I invite you at this time to stand for the victory of President Ranil Wickremesinghe who is the only leader who can move the country forward without revengeful politics.
We spoke to Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He did not take on the responsibility either. In the end, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is a sole representative in Parliament, had to be assigned this responsibility. Ranil Wickremesinghe not only accepted the responsibility but also faced that massive challenge.
