The Nelum Pokuna Theater in Colombo hosted the launching ceremony of the “Press Vs. Prez” book yesterday (07), with President Ranil Wickremesinghe presiding over the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the President emphasised the importance of such publications in a democratic society, noting that they reflect the freedom and diversity of opinions that exist within the country.
President Wickremesinghe highlighted that in a totalitarian state, such works would never come to fruition, underscoring the significance of the established freedom of expression. This book was published under a guidance and concept of MP Vajira Abeywardena.
This book provides insights into how newspaper cartoonists portrayed President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s unique role in steering the country through economic turmoil.
The compilation has been curated by United National Party Chairman, MP Vajira Abeywardena said.
Since President Ranil Wickremesinghe took office as a member of the ninth Parliament on June 23, 2021, this collection has been curated by gathering 600 cartoons from newspapers that depict his leadership journey up until May 2023.
Forty cartoonists and around twenty journalists have contributed their works to this compilation. The contributions of the cartoonists and television anchors who presented these cartoons on TV were also recognised at this ceremony.
Indian cartoonist Nala Ponnappa spoke at the book launch as a special guest. Ministers Nimal Siripala De Silva, Ali Sabry, Tiran Alles, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chief of Presidential Staff and Presidential Advisor on National Security Sagala Rathnayake and former MP Ruwan Wijewardene were also present.
