Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya engaged in an informal dialogue with young people focusing on mental health and wellbeing on October 11 at De Saram House, Colombo in connection with World Mental Health Day.
Organized by UNICEF Sri Lanka and MHPSS.net in collaboration with the Youth Advisory Network (YAN), the event brought together youth aged 18 to 24 to discuss their experiences, perspectives and the mental health challenges faced by young people in Sri Lanka. During the interactive session, the Prime Minister held an open conversation with participants, listening to their insights regarding pressures on mental wellbeing, barriers to seeking support and the necessity of safe, supportive environments.
Participants also introduced Dr. Amarasuriya to “On My Mind,” a podcast series adapted into Sinhala and Tamil with active youth involvement to encourage open dialogue and provide accessible mental health resources. Furthermore, the discussion explored youth leadership in mental health awareness and the strengthening of support systems across schools, families and communities.
The event saw participation from UNICEF Representative in Sri Lanka Emma Brigham, representatives of MHPSS.net and members of the Youth Advisory Network. (Newswire)
