Two students were admitted to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital on Tuesday (21) afternoon after the principal of a school in the Nawalapitiya area made them eat lunch sheets and newspapers as a punishment for several students who did not comply with a notification not to bring lunch wrapped in newspapers and lunch sheets.
This incident took place at Nawalapitiya Rambukpitiya Central College. Two Grade 11 students who are going to face the GCE O/L Exam this year have been admitted to the hospital.Seven students had brought lunches, covered in polythene and wrapped with newspaper pages from the 33 children in that class.
When the seven students were putting the polythene and newspaper pages that they had brought back home after having lunch, the principal who came to the place took them out from the bags and gave them to the seven children to eat at that moment and the students have eaten the polythene and newspapers.
Among the seven children who ate polythene and newspapers, one student (21) and another student (22) were admitted by their parents to Nawalapitiya District General Hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting and sore throat.
The Nawalapitiya Police have started an investigation based on a complaint made to the Nawalapitiya Police by the father of a student receiving reatment in the hospital regarding the incident.
