Private sector entrepreneurs and businessmen are a backbone of country’s economy – Dr. Rajapakshe

The launch of the new report of the study on strategic needs for business success and social engagement in Sri Lanka, which was conducted in collaboration with European Chamber of Commerce (ECCSL), Sri Lanka’s Social Cohesion and Peace Strengthening Programme (SCOPE), Deutsche Gesellschaft For Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Ministry of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms together with the financial backing of European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office, was held yesterday (22) at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo.

Private sector entrepreneurs and businessmen are the backbone of a country’s economy, said the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC speaking at the event.

The study was based on interviews conducted with 41 businesses covering the nine provinces of Sri Lanka and explored the current state of the transformative power of the private sector in shaping social dynamics. It was special to conduct this exploratory study in an environment where there is no extensive research on this topic in Sri Lanka.

Minister Rajapakshe said that if such studies were done a few years ago with the intervention of the government, we could have avoided the economic crises we had to face in the past. But unfortunately we could not do those things. The Minister also said that he would take this opportunity to express his gratitude to the European Union and other institutions that supported it for conducting such a study and that as a result of this process, Sri Lanka’s economy as well as people’s lives can become better in the future. The minister further mentioned that private entrepreneurs and businessmen are the backbone of a country’s economy. Since private entrepreneurs contribute more to the revival of the economy of a country, it is essential to prepare the environment for their business activities in the most suitable way, so the government is committed to establishing the rule of law and establishing the stability and reliability of the judicial system and that the necessary legal reforms have been made for it.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabri, PC, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the European Union Carman Moreno, and President of the Sri Lanka European Chamber of Commerce Haten Rajabdeen expressed their views at the event. The Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, N. M. Ranasinghe, private entrepreneurs, government officials and others joined the event.
