Probe into claim of jewellery theft by woman

An extensive investigation has been initiated on a complaint made by a visual artiste to the Dankotuwa Police that while she was travelling in a passenger bus, someone had cut open her bag and stolen gold jewellery worth more than Rs.4.5 million which were inside it.

She said that this theft had taken place on March 7 while she was traveling in a passenger bus from Wennappuwa to Thoppuwa. However,she had come to lodge the complaint, on Wednesday (8).

The complainant, a visual artiste, had told the police that this stock of gold belongs to a friend of hers who is working in Italy. She had also mentioned that these gold items were handed over to her care when her friend went back to Italy.

She said that she had kept this stock of gold for safekeeping in a safe of a state bank in Wennappuwa and two months ago, she had taken the gold from the safe and deposited it in a branch of a private bank in Dankotuwa.

She also told the police that her friend from Italy had called her saying that she needed money urgently and informed her to pawn the gold items and take the money.

She told the police that accordingly, she had taken the gold articles from the private bank in Dankotuwa on March 7and the theft had taken place when she was travelling by bus to a place in Wennappuwa to pawn the gold items.

Although police had tried to contact the owner of these gold articles, they have failed to do so.

The police said that the complaint made about the theft of gold items is problematic, and as a result, they are paying special attention to the investigations that are being conducted.
