The Narahenpita Police has commenced an extensive investigation into the theft of gold from the house in Narahenpita of
an accountant working in a bank in the United States.
The accountant had complained to the police about this theft on Tuesday. However she had not provided the police with a specific date on which the theft has taken place or the value of the gold items. She has told the police that there was a large stock of gold articles in a wardrobe at home and now all those gold articles are missing. She had said she suspects the maid of the house for this theft. The complainant accountant resides in America with her husband and children. Her mother-in-law had been living at the house in Narahenpita. Police said that a maid had been kept in the house to take care of the mother and to keep her company since she lived alone. The maid is a resident of Dharga Town.
Her mother-in-law had suddenly fallen ill and was admitted to a hospital on February 5. She had died on February 10, while receiving treatment. This accountant from America and her husband and family members had come to Sri Lanka on February 13. The police said that after arriving and completing the last rites and alms givings, it had been discovered that the gold items were missing. The police said that when the accountant’s mother-in-law was in hospital, only the maid had been staying at the house and during that time a stranger had visited the house and taken away bags full of stuff. Police said that the identity of the woman has not yet been revealed and it appears that she is a person known to the maid of this house.
A senior officer of the Narahenpita Police said that they are interrogating the maid at length in connection with the theft and are in the process of taking necessary legal steps to find out more information.
