Probe underway over social media train ride

There is a video circulating on social media performing massage therapy for foreign tourists in a train compartment and as a Sri Lankan and a railway employee, I see this as a very demeaning act, General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways J.I.D. Jayasundara said yesterday.

Addressing the Media briefing held in Colombo yesterday, he stated that the incident did not occur on a regular passenger train operated by the Sri Lanka Railways, but on a special train hired by a private tourism company.

Private companies are allowed to hire trains from the Railways for activities related to tourism promotion. This particular incident took place on a train hired by one such company,” he explained.

As soon as I was informed about this, I instructed the relevant sections to immediately initiate an investigation into this matter. The Tourist Police were also informed about the incident and will initiate a separate investigation. “An investigation has already been initiated and we will recover the losses incurred to the train compartment from the responsible parties. Following the investigation, legal action will also be taken in the future,” the railway GM added.
