P&S apologises over expired cream bun incident, says checks being strengthened

Perera and Sons (P&S) has apologised over an incident involving expired bakery products at its St. Benedict’s Mawatha outlet, describing it as a “genuine error” and announcing tighter expiry-date checks across all its outlets.

The statement follows a Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court decision to fine Perera and Sons Bakers Pvt Ltd Rs. 200,000 after the company pleaded guilty to selling expired bakery products. The case stemmed from a Consumer Affairs Authority inspection on April 20, during which strawberry-flavoured cream buns carrying an expiry date of April 16 were found being offered for sale.

In a public notice addressing the incident, P&S said it was reviewing how the lapse occurred and strengthening its checking procedures not only at the outlet concerned but throughout its network.

The company said its teams were being instructed to exercise greater care in checking expiry dates to prevent a recurrence.

P&S also said it deliberately maintains a relatively short shelf life for its products as part of its approach to providing fresher food, while acknowledging that the practice requires greater vigilance in monitoring products on shelves.

“This is where we fell short,” the company said, adding that customers could contact its customer care channels with questions, concerns or suggestions.

The CAA had earlier urged consumers to check manufacturing and expiry dates when purchasing food items and to report businesses selling expired products through its 1977 hotline. (Newswire)
