In view of the economic crisis that Sri Lanka is facing, with the aim of improving food security in country and the upgrading the living conditions of the farmers, Qatar Charity has started a program to provide free urea, TSP and MOP fertilizers to 3746 farming families in three districts of our country.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries and the Qatar Charity organization signed a memorandum of understanding regarding this matter today. Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi and the country director of that organization Mr. Mahmoud S.M. Abhukalif signed it.
The representatives of the Qatar Charity had previously discussed with the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, and the Minister fully contributed to it.
According to this MoU, it is planned to provide free urea, TSP and MOP fertilizers to 3476 farmers in the three districts of Kurunegala, Matale and Monaragala. According to this agreement, 1476 farmers from Kurunegala district, 1000 farmers from Matale district and 1000 farmers from Monaragala district have been selected.
A 25 kg bale each of Urea, TSP and MOP fertilizers will be provided to a selected beneficiary farm family. In selecting the beneficiaries for this purpose, the activities have been done based on obtaining information from the District Secretaries, Agricultural Development Deputy and Assistant Commissioners.
Qatar Charity is an organization that currently implements humanitarian and development programs in 65 countries. The representative of the organization said that this step was taken in consideration of the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka as well as food security.
