Queue for heart surgeries at Karapitiya Hospital

Over 4,000 heart patients are registered for heart surgeries at the Cardio-thoracic unit of Karapitya National Hospital Director Dr. S. P. U. M. Ranga said.

Accordingly, a patient who registers for surgery in 2025 has to wait for his or her surgery in the waiting list for about three years.

Explaining the situation Hospital Director also said:

“There are three operating theatres in the cardio-thoracic unit. But there are only three surgeons in the hospital. However, all three theatres cannot be used concurrently. About 35 surgeries are performed monthly. As such 350 to 400 operations can be completed.

Although three anaesthetists are needed only two are in the service and one of them works on contract basis. We need 15 doctors for the unit. But we have only eight doctors.

When Consultant Surgeon Namal Gamage was in service he performed about four surgeries per day. According to his experience he completed about 36 surgeries during a month”.
