Railways launches project to renovate old tracks

The Sri Lanka Railway Department has launched a project to renovate railway tracks in the country under several phases.

Railways Department Chief Engineer H.M.K.W.Bandara said the Kelani Valley railway line will be repaired under the first phase of the railway tracks renovation project.

Bandara said that 10,000 railway tracks which are imported from China and 7,000 tracks removed during the reconstruction of railway lines between Anuradhapura and Omanthai will be used for the renovation and replacement of dilapidated railway tracks in the country He also said that feasibility studies have been carried out and extensive research done to identify the most crucial high risk railway tracks in the country that require urgent attention for renovation and replacement. The identified dilapidated railway tracks are currently causing all trains running on them to travel under restricted speed limits to avoid danger and prevent accidents that cause the trains to run much slower than the normal speed.
