He added that he murderers provoked by the JVP killed Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala in the heart of Nittambuwa in a way that no one would do. “The houses and properties of 72 MPs and Ministers representing the Parliament were set on fire within 12 hours, depriving them of their all belongings through a subtle operation,” he said.
The Minister said that more than 1,000 SLPP supporters were chased and beaten. “Buses were set on fire. Houses were set on fire. Their houses were burnt. Even in distant villages, SLPP supporters were not allowed to come out of their houses and they were insulted and ridiculed,” he said.
The Minister added that they created a serious atmosphere of terror throughout the country, making it impossible for them to go to a temple, a mosque, a religious place, a relative’s house. “On the night of May 09, the strugglers including the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna called the struggle to the Parliament in Kotte. All the TV channels recorded who was there,” he added.
“This group of murderers has become virtuous today. Some have also come forward as Presidential candidates in the democratic mainstream. The goal of the extremists and those with a history of killing was to destroy Parliament. If Parliament is on fire, there is no place to make laws. If there is no place to make laws, there is no Court to enforce the law. Then the country becomes anarchic and the law of the jungle reigns,” the Minister said.
He added that the people of this country have not forgotten the era when the law of the jungle reigned during the terror of 1989. “The gunman came to the houses and killed the important people in front of their children. People’s ID cards were collected. People were taken out and killed.”
He said that Sri Lanka would have turned into another Bangladesh following the ouster of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, if the latter did not send the letter appointing Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister, from overseas.
He said that massive destruction is taking place in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country.
