Ranjan Jayathilaka wins medals at Masters Athletics

The veteran athlete Ranjan Jayathilaka representing Sri Lanka Singers Association won a gold and a silver medal at the 35th Annual Masters (Open) Athletic Championship organised by Sri Lanka Masters Athletic Association and successfully concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo on February 19 and 20.

Ranjan participated in 75 age group category and secured gold medal in 400 meter and obtained silver medal in 800 meter. The large number of Master Athletes from foreign countries in the region took part in the championship while this meet will serve as a trial to select athletes for international Meets including Asian and World Masters Athletic Championships to be held in 2022.

He also represented Sri Lanka in the World Masters Athletic meet held in Malaga, Spain in 2019 and the Masters Athletic Asian Meet held in 2020 in Kuchin, Malaysia.

Ranjan is a retired Inspector of Police attached to the Criminal Records Division for several years. He has sung around 35 songs in his singing career and some of them were much popularized in past decades.

Ranjan is an old boy of St. Joseph’s College, Gampola and he started his sports career from school days. He has participated in school games and obtained various victories in school career.
