A supermarket in Ratmalana has been fined Rs. 500,000 for selling imported Kiri Ponni/Paal Ponni rice above the government-mandated maximum retail price.
The Consumer Affairs Authority filed the case before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court against Beliatta Exim Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, which operates Belta Super Mart on Galle Road, Ratmalana.
The supermarket had sold the rice at Rs. 270 per kilogram, Rs. 15 above the prescribed maximum retail price of Rs. 255 per kilogram.
The company pleaded guilty to the charge, following which the court imposed a Rs. 500,000 fine.
The maximum retail price of Rs. 255 per kilogram for imported Kiri Ponni or Paal Ponni GR 11 rice was set under an Extraordinary Gazette issued on Oct. 21, 2025. (Newswire)
