New Democratic Front’s Secretary Sharmila Perera said that Ravi Karunanayake’s appointment as a National List MP was in accordance with the MoU reached with the other parties in the alliance.
“We have acted according to our right to nominate member to the National list that our party is entitled to according to the MoU between the allied parties and our party.
We can say that we have not done anything outside of the MoU or to the detriment of it, even though anyone can see it as a mistake or an arbitrary act”.
She was explaining the situation of the current controversy surrounding the nomination of Ravi Karunanayake as an MP on the National List representing the New Democratic Front (NDF) by issuing a communiqué yesterday.
“The nomination of a member representing the NDF for the National List should have been done by November 18, 2024. But the representatives of the other parties in the alliance had not informed me anything regarding their nominations until then. So we proceeded to submit the name of Ravi Karunanayake to the Election Commission, which was the decision taken by the party. Before that, we notified Party Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe of the proposal that was confirmed by the party,” she said.
“We have not done anything illegal or against the MoU in nominating this National List candidate and we have only exercised our rights. In the last few days, some groups and individuals who are not a partner party in the alliance and who constantly switch parties without any voter base and who have no morals have made various statements.”We see it as a waste of time to reply to their rhetoric,” she added.
