Recent LPL player auction to be scrutinised

Sources indicate that the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Corruption in Sports has focused on the auction process of players in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) tournament, specifically the prices at which players were acquired by team owners.

Further information from sources suggests that the Special Investigation Unit suspects that the high purchase prices of some players at the recent LPL player auction may be part of a conspiracy. Suspicion has particularly arisen from a certain team owner’s purchase of a retired Sri Lankan player for US$ 100,000. The unit is investigating whether foreign

exchange entering Sri Lanka is being fraudulently redirected to foreign accounts during such international tournaments. Surveillance on this matter is ongoing.

Additionally, the Special Investigation Unit is monitoring whether there is a scheme to obtain commissions by purchasing certain players at the auction. Sources say that the unit plans to interrogate many more individuals in the future.

The Special Investigation Unit, which recently arrested Tamim Rahman, a Bangladeshi national and alleged owner of the Dambulla Thunders team in the LPL tournament, will conduct a comprehensive investigation based on intelligence received regarding the upcoming LPL tournament.

Rahman participated in the player auction as the owner of the Dambulla Thunders team, purchasing 24 local and foreign players for US$ 450,000.

However, a British company named Imperial Sports Group is listed as the official owner of the Dambulla Thunders. The Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Corruption in Sports is closely monitoring this situation.
